CHAPTER SIX

LYSAN got up the following morning wanting to go to Dante's room to say goodbye to him before he left. Then she felt suddenly certain that he had already left Puerto Varas and, because of that last thought-the thought that she had already said goodbye to him-she was unable to find the view from her window as enchanting as it had been yesterday.

Dressed in a white, short-sleeved cotton two-piece, she went down to breakfast in a disconsolate frame of mind. It wasn't going to get any better; she knew that. She crossed the foyer and went along a wide corridor and then as she entered the dining room the sun suddenly came out!

As if drawn by some invisible magnet her glance went to a table near the window.

Dante had not left! He was still here! Her heart lifted and joy entered her being.

Nor was he being all arrogant and `get on with it' in relation to her snappy parting from him last night. But he was looking her way and having spotted her, to show he bore her no ill will, he courteously rose to his feet, indicating that he expected her to join him.

With a spring in her step she breezed across the room to him. `Hello,' she smiled warmly by way of apology for her sourness of the previous evening. `I'm so glad I haven't missed you."

'Haven't missed me?' he queried as they sat down.

`What time's your plane?"

'What would you like to do today?' he countered before she could blink.

`You're staying?' she gasped, surprised, delighted and unable to hold either down.

`You don't seem to mind too much?' he queried solemnly, and again Lysan heard warning bells. Pride demanded that he never knew of her feelings for him.

But, insisted that wilting part of her, there was no reason to hide that she liked him. `You work too hard a day's holiday will do you good. 'Doubt, nerves that had knocked her self-confidence, had stabbed at her since she had started to fall in love with him, were there again. `But you don't have to spend your free time with me, Dante,' she felt obliged to tell him. `Since I took myself from under your roof, you don't have to feel responsible for me.'

He smiled, and she loved him. `Would you deprive me of the company of one of the sparkiest women I know?' he enquired.

She had no idea what he meant by 'sparkiest', but it sounded like a compliment, even if it did have connotations that, unlike those extinct volcanoes out there, he never knew at what moment she might suddenly erupt.

`I'd love to share your day with you,' she laughed. Oh, how marvellous, wonderful; she didn't know what she'd done to deserve it, but she was going to spend a few more hours with him.

`So where would you like to go?'

Lysan put her head to one side to consider. She would like a look around Puerto Varas, but they could probably do that on foot in too short a while.
